This 1926 Oregon Trail Memorial Half Dollar is a classic and highly regarded commemorative issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint to honor the pioneers who traversed the Oregon Trail during the great westward expansion of the mid-19th century. Authorized by Congress in 1926 with a generous maximum mintage of 6,000,000 pieces across multiple years and mints, the 1926 Philadelphia issue saw 47,955 examples distributed after a total striking of approximately 48,000 coins (including assay pieces). The series continued intermittently until 1939, making it the longest-running commemorative half dollar program.

The coin was promoted by the Oregon Trail Memorial Association to raise awareness and funds for memorials along the historic route, which stretched approximately 2,000 miles from Missouri to Oregon and played a vital role in the settlement of the American West.

Design Highlights

Designed by the distinguished husband-and-wife team of sculptors James Earle Fraser and Laura Gardin Fraser—renowned for works such as the Buffalo Nickel—the coin is widely praised for its artistic balance and evocative imagery.

The obverse features a detailed scene of a covered Conestoga wagon drawn by two oxen, cresting a hill and heading westward toward the setting sun, symbolizing the arduous journey of the pioneers. Inscriptions include “OREGON TRAIL MEMORIAL” and the date “1926,” along with “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

The reverse presents a powerful full-length figure of a Native American warrior standing erect, his right arm outstretched with an open hand in a gesture of peace or warning. Behind him appears a map of the United States with a dotted line tracing the Oregon Trail from the Missouri River to the Pacific Northwest. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “HALF DOLLAR,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
