This 1964 (P) Kennedy Half Dollar is a historically significant regular-issue coin from the Kennedy Half Dollar series, struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a mintage of 277,254,766 pieces. Produced in the inaugural year of the series, which began in 1964 and continues to the present, it represents the only 90% silver Kennedy half dollar issued for general circulation and stands as a national tribute to the nation’s 35th president.

The Kennedy Half Dollar was authorized by Congress in late 1963 and introduced in early 1964 to replace the Franklin Half Dollar following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Its design reflects themes of liberty, strength, and presidential leadership during a pivotal era in American history.

Design Highlights

Designed by Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts (obverse) and Assistant Engraver Frank Gasparro (reverse), the coin presents a dignified and symbolic portrayal of presidential heritage.

The obverse features a left-facing portrait of President John F. Kennedy, depicted with a thoughtful expression and wearing a suit. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date “1964.” The designer’s initials “GR” appear on the truncation of the bust.

The reverse displays the Presidential Coat of Arms, featuring a heraldic eagle with a shield, holding an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, with a banner inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “HALF DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
