Key Date from Estate Sale Collection

This authentic 1899 Silver Barber Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint and forms part of a carefully assembled collection recently acquired from a private estate sale. It is a notable issue within the classic Barber Quarter series (1892–1916).

Coin Specifications Year: 1899 Mint: Philadelphia (no mint mark) Mintage: 12,624,000 pieces — the highest regular-issue mintage in the Barber Quarter series Composition: 90% Silver, 10% Copper (.900 fine silver) Weight: 6.25 grams Diameter: 24.3 mm Designer: Charles E. Barber Obverse: Portrait of Liberty facing right, wearing a Phrygian cap and laurel wreath, inscribed with “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year, surrounded by stars Reverse: An eagle with outstretched wings perched on a bundle of arrows, flanked by two olive branches, inscribed with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “QUARTER DOLLAR” Edge: Reeded

Historical Context and Rarity The Barber Quarter, designed by Charles E. Barber, was minted from 1892 to 1916 as part of a new silver coinage design that included the dime, quarter, and half dollar. The 1899 Philadelphia issue features the highest mintage of the entire series at 12,624,000 pieces. While not a scarce date, examples from this year are popular with collectors for their availability in circulated grades and their role in completing a date-and-mint set of Barber Quarters. San Francisco (1899-S) and New Orleans (1899-O) issues from the same year carry lower mintages and greater scarcity, particularly the 1899-S.

Condition Note This specimen comes directly from an estate sale collection. Condition varies across estate-found coins; please refer to the accompanying high-resolution photographs for a precise evaluation of surface quality, toning, marks, and overall eye appeal.
