This 1920 Pilgrim Tercentenary Half Dollar is a significant commemorative issue from the early series of United States half dollars honoring pivotal moments in American history. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a net distribution of approximately 152,000 pieces following the melting of unsold examples, it marks the 300th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ arrival in the New World in 1620.

The coin was authorized by Congress to support the tercentenary celebrations, particularly those centered in Plymouth, Massachusetts, including projects to beautify the area around Plymouth Rock and to fund related memorial observances. Production occurred in 1920, with a subsequent 1921 issue to utilize remaining authorization.

Design Highlights

Designed by the noted Boston sculptor Cyrus E. Dallin, renowned for his depictions of historical and Native American figures, the coin embodies the spirit of the early settlers and their voyage.

The obverse features a dignified half-length portrait of Governor William Bradford, a key leader of the Plymouth Colony who served for three decades. He is depicted wearing traditional Pilgrim attire, including a broad-brimmed hat, and carrying a Bible (often identified as his manuscript of Of Plymouth Plantation) under his arm. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “PILGRIM HALF DOLLAR.” The 1920 issue notably lacks a date on this side.

The reverse presents a detailed rendering of the Mayflower, the historic ship that carried the Pilgrims across the Atlantic, shown under full sail on the ocean, heading westward. Encircling the design are the words “PILGRIM TERCENTENARY CELEBRATION” with the anniversary dates “1620–1920” below. Additional national inscriptions and the denomination complete the composition.
