This 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial Half Dollar is a historically significant commemorative issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint to support the creation of the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial near Atlanta, Georgia. Authorized by Congress on March 17, 1924, with a maximum authorized mintage of 5,000,000 pieces, a total of 2,314,709 coins were struck. After extensive public sales efforts, approximately 1,314,709 examples were ultimately distributed, with the remainder returned and melted.

The coin was issued as part of a major fundraising campaign for the massive bas-relief carving on Stone Mountain, intended to honor the soldiers and leaders of the Confederacy during the Civil War. It remains one of the most widely circulated and recognizable early U.S. commemorative half dollars.

Design Highlights

Designed by the renowned sculptor Gutzon Borglum, who later gained fame as the primary sculptor of Mount Rushmore, the coin features powerful, high-relief imagery that captures Southern heritage and military valor.

The obverse presents equestrian portraits of two prominent Confederate generals: General Robert E. Lee on the left and General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson on the right, both shown in profile riding forward. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “STONE MOUNTAIN,” and the date “1925.” The designer’s initials “GB” appear near the base.

The reverse depicts a detailed rendering of the Stone Mountain Memorial carving in progress, showing an eagle with outstretched wings perched atop a mountain crag, with the inscription “MEMORIAL TO THE VALOR OF THE SOLDIER OF THE SOUTH” above. Below the eagle are the anniversary dates “1865” and “1925,” along with “HALF DOLLAR” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
