This 1926 Sesquicentennial of American Independence Half Dollar is a distinctive commemorative issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint to mark the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Authorized by Congress with a maximum mintage of 1,000,000 pieces, the actual distribution was significantly lower, with only approximately 141,120 examples sold to the public at a premium, the remainder being returned and melted.

The coin was produced as part of the national celebrations surrounding the Sesquicentennial Exposition held in Philadelphia. It stands out in American numismatic history as the only United States coin to depict a sitting president—Calvin Coolidge—alongside George Washington during his lifetime.

Design Highlights

Designed by Chief Engraver John R. Sinnock, with assistance from preliminary sketches by artist John Frederick Lewis, the coin features a low-relief style characteristic of the period.

The obverse presents overlapping right-facing busts of George Washington and Calvin Coolidge. Washington, the nation’s first president, appears in front, while Coolidge, the president in 1926, is positioned slightly behind. Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The designer’s initials appear on the truncation of Washington’s bust.

The reverse centers on a detailed representation of the Liberty Bell, faithfully showing its famous crack. Flanking the bell are the anniversary dates “1776” and “1926.” The primary inscription reads “SESQUICENTENNIAL OF AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE,” with the denomination “HALF DOLLAR” below.
