This 1927 Vermont Sesquicentennial Half Dollar is a notable commemorative issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Bennington in 1777, a pivotal engagement during the American Revolutionary War that bolstered colonial morale and contributed to the eventual independence of Vermont. Authorized by Congress with a maximum mintage of 40,000 pieces, a total of 40,034 were struck (including assay specimens), of which approximately 28,142 were distributed to the public, with the remainder returned and melted.

The coin was produced in connection with celebrations honoring Vermont’s early history and the Green Mountain Boys’ role in the fight for liberty. It is recognized in numismatic circles for its exceptionally high relief, the highest among early commemorative half dollars.

Design Highlights

Designed by the accomplished sculptor Charles Keck, who had previously created the Panama-Pacific Exposition gold dollar, the coin captures key elements of Vermont’s founding spirit.

The obverse features a right-facing bust of Ira Allen, a founder of Vermont and brother of Ethan Allen, leader of the Green Mountain Boys. Allen is depicted with a thoughtful expression, wearing period attire. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “IRA ALLEN FOUNDER OF VERMONT.”

The reverse presents a powerful depiction of a catamount (mountain lion), a now-extinct wild cat native to Vermont’s wilderness, shown in a prowling stance. This fierce symbol represents the rugged independence and natural heritage of the region. Inscriptions include “BATTLE OF BENNINGTON,” the anniversary dates “1777–1927,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “HALF DOLLAR.” The designer’s initials “CK” appear on the reverse.
