This 1946 Iowa Centennial Half Dollar is a well-executed commemorative issue struck at the Philadelphia Mint to mark the 100th anniversary of Iowa’s admission to the Union as the 29th state in 1846. Authorized by Congress on August 7, 1946, with a maximum mintage of 100,000 pieces, a total of 100,057 coins were produced (including assay specimens), and nearly the entire issue was distributed to the public.

The coin was issued in connection with statewide centennial celebrations and stands as one of the final silver commemorative half dollars of the classic era. It is particularly noted for its clean, balanced designs created by a former U.S. Mint engraver.

Design Highlights

Designed by Adam Pietz, the coin presents clear and symbolic representations of Iowa’s heritage and statehood.

The obverse features the Iowa state seal, centered on a majestic American eagle with wings spread wide, holding a banner inscribed with the state motto: “OUR LIBERTIES WE PRIZE AND OUR RIGHTS WE WILL MAINTAIN.” Above the eagle are 28 stars, and below appears “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Encircling the design are the inscriptions “IOWA STATEHOOD CENTENNIAL” and the anniversary dates “1846–1946.”

The reverse depicts the historic Old Stone Capitol building in Iowa City, the state’s first permanent capitol, shown with a cloud formation in the background. Inscriptions include “IN GOD WE TRUST” above the building, “LIBERTY” below, and around the periphery “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “HALF DOLLAR.”
