This 1937-S Texas Independence Centennial Half Dollar is a rare and historically significant issue from the celebrated Texas Centennial series. Struck at the San Francisco Mint with a limited mintage of only 6,637 pieces, it forms part of the extended commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Texas’s independence from Mexico in 1836.

The series was authorized by Congress in 1933 at the request of the American Legion’s Texas Centennial Committee to support the centennial celebrations and related memorial projects. Production began in 1934 and continued through 1938, even after the official centennial year of 1936.

Design Highlights

Designed by the renowned sculptor Pompeo Coppini, who had previously created several important Texan public monuments, the coin features intricate symbolism of Texas history.

The obverse depicts a majestic eagle perched atop an oak branch, superimposed upon the Lone Star of Texas — a powerful emblem of the state’s identity and independence.

The reverse presents a richly detailed scene: the winged goddess Victory spreading her wings protectively over the historic Alamo Mission. To the sides appear cameo portraits of two founding fathers of the Republic of Texas — General Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. Above them fly the Six Flags over Texas, representing the successive governments that ruled the region, alongside the banner of Liberty. The inscriptions include “THE TEXAS INDEPENDENCE CENTENNIAL” and the stirring reminder “REMEMBER THE ALAMO,” together with the anniversary dates 1836–1936.
